Bihar Museum Patna: The Museum That Beat the Met and the Louvre
Patna has a new claim to fame. In October 2026, Munich-based travel guide Worth a Journey ranked the Bihar Museum 9th in the world and #1 in Asia on its list of the World's 100 Best Museums. It finished ahead of New York's ``Metropolitan Museum of Art (10th) and the Louvre in Paris (31st), and it is the only Indian museum on the list. If you think of museums as dusty halls with faded labels, this one will change your mind. Here is everything you need to know before you visit.
What Is the Bihar Museum and Where Is It?
The Bihar Museum is a modern history, archaeology and art museum run by the Government of Bihar. It holds more than 30,000 artifacts that trace about 5,000 years of life on the Gangetic plains, from Stone Age tools to the Battle of Buxar in 1764. Objects from after 1764 stay at the older Patna Museum on Buddh Marg.
- Address: Nehru Path (Bailey Road), Patna, Bihar 800001
- From the airport: about 10 minutes by car or auto-rickshaw
- From Patna Junction: about 10 minutes by road
- Campus: nearly 14 acres of pavilions, courtyards and gardens
Why Did Bihar Museum Rank #9 in the World?
Worth a Journey ranks museums using visitor reviews, data analysis and in-person visits by its inspectors. Four things helped the Bihar Museum stand out:
- Treasures in their home region. Many big Western museums show objects taken from other countries. Here, masterpieces like the Didarganj Yakshi are shown close to where they were made.
- No museum fatigue. Shaded courtyards, trees and water features sit between the galleries, so you can rest your eyes and feet as you go.
- Clear, engaging displays. Galleries follow history in order, with good lighting, touchscreens and short films that work for both adults and children.
- Visitor comfort. Halls are air-conditioned, wheelchairs are free, washrooms are clean, and there is a good restaurant on site.
The Architecture and the People Behind It
The museum was the vision of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who wanted a world-class home for Bihar's heritage. It is the only government project in independent India chosen through a two-stage international design competition.
In 2011, Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki won that competition, beating firms such as Foster + Partners, Snøhetta and Studio Daniel Libeskind. He worked with Mumbai's Opolis Architects. Lord Cultural Resources of Toronto planned the exhibitions, and Larsen & Toubro built the complex.
Maki designed the museum as a "village of pavilions" clad in rust-coloured weathering steel. The building reveals itself slowly as you walk, room by room and courtyard by courtyard. It also holds a 5-Star GRIHA green rating for saving water and energy.
The children's gallery opened in 2015, and the full museum opened on October 2, 2017.
